Biography
Didier Godel was born in Geneva. He commenced his postgraduate education at Geneva College and graduated in architecture from the University of Geneva. He graduated with a diploma for flute (class of André Pepin), organ (class of Pierre Segond), music culture and conducting (class of Samuel Baud-Bovy). He also won the compositions prize (class of André-François Marescotti).
He attended various master classes in the field of conducting for orchestra and choir, in particular with Sergiu Celibidache (Bologna, 1974), Pierre Colombo (Sion, 1975), Helmut Rilling (Stuttgart 1982) and John Poole (Parthenay, 1998 and 2001).
In 1970 he became the organist at the church 'Temple de Champel' in Geneva, in 1971 a teacher of aural training at Geneva Conservatory and in 1977 the director of the 'Societé de Chant Sacré'. All three positions are still held by Didier Godel today.
From 1972 until 1995 he was music critic for the 'Journal de Genève' and from 1972 until 1994 he worked for the organ builders 'Dunand' as an architect and organ designer.
From 1964 until 1982 he was conductor of the brass ensemble 'Camerata Gabrieli de Genève' performing numerous concerts, often together with organists and choirs.
He has composed circa thirty pieces for choir (an oratorium, a cantata and numerous smaller pieces), for orchestra, for solo instrument and orchestra (concerto for trombone, bassoon, panpipes) and various chamber music pieces. Didier Godel is president of the Professors Association at Geneva Conservatory, president of the 'Société coopérative d’édition musicale Cantate Domino', a member of the commission for the revision of the hymnbook of the protestant church of the French speaking part of Switzerland, secretary of the association of the classical choir from Geneva and a member of the board for the Frank Martin Society.
Didier Godel is married and the father of two children.
