Biography
Heinrich Sutermeister, *12. 08. 1910, †16. 03. 1995. Composer, mainly active in the field of opera.

Heinrich Sutermeister was born in Feuerthalen near Schaffhausen in Switzerland. He attended the Humanist College in Basel and studied music history and German literature. He became familiar with the music of Arthur Honegger during a study trip to Paris and was finally convinced that his career should lie in music following an exchange of letters with Walter Courvoisier in Munich.
A one-year apprenticeship at Berne's City Theatre as the solo repetitor followed his graduation from the Munich Academy of the Art of Music. His contact with Munich (Karl Orff) and the repertoire of the then National Theatre was maintained. Based on the influence of Verdi's late work, his first opera "Romeo and Juliet" was created. "Die ZauberinseI" followed and, under the influence of the War years, the operas "Niobe" and "Raskolnikoff", which were presented in the Mailand Scala under the scenic and musical direction of Issay Dobrowens.
Works for concert and choir alternated with further musical dramatic works ("Roter Stiefel", performed at the World Exhibition in Brussels, "Titus Feuerfuchs", and "Madame Bovary", commissioned by the Zurich Opera House). Sutermeister was grateful to Berne Radio for their early and crucial support after their commission of several of his compositions.
Sutermeister lived as a freelance composer in Vaux-sur-Morges from 1942 until his death. He was conferred the City of Salzburg Opera Prize in 1965 and the Swiss Association of Musician's Prize in 1967. He had been a member of the 'Bayerischen Akademie der Schönen Künste' since 1977.
Heinrich Sutermeister died in Vaux-sur-Morges.
