Hans-Jürg Rickenbacher was born in Biel / Bienne, Switzerland. He now teaches at the Basel Academy of Music where he himself studied voice, guitar and school music. After the Swiss Opera Studio he won diverse fellowships, attended master classes and received tuition from Nicolaï Gedda in Stockholm and Margreet Honig in Amsterdam.
The repertoire of Hans-Jürg Rickenbacher spans from Monteverdi right through to contemporary music, his main interests include Bach's Evangelist parts, Händel's and Mozart's opera roles and his numerous lieder programmes.
His performance as a guest has led him through many European countries, America, Israel and Argentina (Teatro Colón).
He has cooperated in concerts, opera productions and recordings with Giovanni Antonini (Il Giardino Armonico), Michel Corboz, Martin Haselböck (Viennese Academy), Heinz Holliger, Hans Martin Linde, Jost Meier, Shao-Chia Lü (Staatsorchester Rheinische Philharmonie), Helmuth Rilling and Thomas Rösner (Orchestre de la Suisse Romande).
