Three musicians have, as composers, bandleaders, sidemen and soloists with prolific, partly collective experience at their disposal ('Cadavre exquis', 'Rouge, frisé et acide7', 'Les Passeurs d'Instants', 'Pane per Tutti') here teamed up to form an extraordinary trio.
Originating from 'classical' piano jazz trio but with the attitude of freely improvising musicians develops, beyond stylistic criteria, a music full of esprit, refraction, surprises and set tos sometimes dangerously out of hand but always finding its way back to unexpected conclusions.
The decline into total chaos is, thanks to an idiosyncratic form and the tact of the three gents, mostly avoided.
Since 1991 the trio has performed at festivals and concerts the world over.
Christian Rentsch describes their music as follows:
"First impressions deceive: what at first sounds monolithic, through-composed, fixed and optimally rehearsed is infact played each time anew and differently by the pianist from Baden Christoph Baumann, the Bassist from Geneva Jacques Siron and the percussionist from Zurich Dieter Ulrich. Their Trio Afrogarage, however, do not simply improvise over habitual chords and repetitive formulas as do the mainstream. The three build up their pieces ad hoc, from quasi prefabricated structural elements; from single fragments which they stick together spontaneously and at lightning speed rather like the pieces of a puzzle. So develops, from the most disparate of individual parts, a new and adventurous musical arrangement on the basis of improvisation. In short: Improvisation squared, a balancing act. A geared music where the piano, bass and percussion interlock like cog wheels. Three master puzzlers."
