Cattrall was formed in 1998 following a performance of the work Linea d'ombra by Magnus Lindberg. This highly virtuosic piece by the Finnish composer is exemplary for a heterogenic ensemble with the capability of conjuring up an incredible palette of new timbres and sound nuances, expanding technical and formal borders and exploring and devising new rooms for expression and imagination.
Keen for the direct communication of a contemporary musical art Cattralls intention is to provide an appealing, through-composed programme and interesting concert styles which befit the music played.
In addition to the performance of various world premieres Cattrall also maintains its own concert series in Zurich and presents engaging programme combinations in a variety of formations ranging from solo works to large chamber scores. The emphasis on close cooperation with young European composers on the one hand side and successful composers such as Salvatore Sciarrino, Elliott Carter and Luciano Berio on the other has allowed the Cattrall Ensemble, in recent years, to perform world premieres of works by Gary Berger, José Luis Campana, Gerald Eckert, Stefan Häussler, Sam Hayden, Junghae Lee, Hans Ulrich Lehmann, Valentin Marti, Nils Mechin, Hans-Jürg Meier, Joao Pedro Oliveira, Emiliano Turazzi, Nadir Vassena, Lotta Wennäkoski, Paul Whitty and Tommy Zwedberg. The artistic direction seems to suggest that these two tasks, the promotion of new works and the cultivation of the ever-increasing repertoire for various formations and concert situations, are central to the contemporary music life of Cattrall. The ensembles repertoire is enhanced by the adaptation of older music, for example with works by Arnold Schoenberg or the waltz composer Josef Lanner. In 2005 Cattrall has added works by Franz Schubert and modern classics like Frank Martin, Erwin Schulhoff and Maurice Ohana to its list of strengths.
The Cattrall ensemble received the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation Sponsorship Prize in 2002.
