Regina IrmanRequiem "An den Tod" (1991-1993)Based on a text by Anna Achmatowa
for twenty-five female voices in six groups from very high to very low register and a minimum of three male voices (bass solo)
Texts: Anna Achmatowa
This piece is based on a phonetic analysis of the voice of Achmatowa as she reads one of her own texts, and it is the musical rather than the semantic elements of Achmatowa's recitation that have been used. A cantus firmus-like line (male voices) defines the melody of her speech in a slow motion tempo. The six choir groups run "homophonically" and are a vertically "harmonious" splitting of the cantus firmus.

Balz TrümpyA Valediction (2003/04)Six songs
for bass and orchestra (2(pic).2.2.(bcl).2(cbn)/2.2.0.0/timp.perc/str)
Texts: John Donne
Orchestral version of the six songs for bass and piano.
In 'A Valediction' I have taken six poems by the Baroque poet John Donne with one prevailing theme: the saying of farewells, the leaving of loved ones. The theme is circumscribed in Donne's picturesque language in a multitude of modes ranging from tender pain to powerful and reckless claims of freedom, and on further to ecstatic delirium in the knowledge that physical separation is revoked by spiritual unification.
In a similar manner to the text, the music circles around a complex nucleus of themes that merge into great lines and trace the various shades of feeling.
'A Valediction' is dedicated to Ute and Susanne Stoecklin.

Texts: Bibel / Liturgie
In this piece the Latinate poetry of the blind born from the gospel according to John, is set to music. In the first part, the wonderment of the event, in the second the interrogation and in the third the words of Jesus to the healed are set forth. The disciples in the first part and the Pharisees in the second are written for a group of three tenors (traditionally called ‘Turba’) who, according to the dramatical situation, speak, whisper or scream.

Balz TrümpyMissa ad te levavi (2010)for a cappella vocal ensemble (SATB)
The "ad te levavi" mass is the compositional result of a research project, in which I investigated the implementation of the adiastematic neumes. It combines the Gregorian proper for the first Sunday of advent with those parts of the ordinary that I used in my vocal cycle "Polyptychon". The Gregorian template is used in the original form and in various compositional adaptations in such a way that the two styles merge.
