The 'Baumann-Haemmerli-Sextett', which came into existence more than 20 years ago and met with success at home and abroad in the 70s and 80s performing in various sized formations, broke up in 1990.
We compiled a new band consisting of young musicians from the 'Hochschule für Musik Luzern' after an invitation from the Schaffhausen Jazz Festival in 1999, since then the band has performed on a regular basis. A CD with the title 'Structures and Spaces' was published under the MIWI-Records label.
The current repertoire encompasses a new suite which, based on an old folksong, reflects on the possible extremes of the city and the countryside, and a set within which the free handling of composed material is explored.
Improvisatory treatment of various musical materials and an interest in creating major musical coherences is a central feature of the formations intentions.
The musicologist Jürg Solothurnmann writes:
"The title 'Structures & Spaces' strikes a chord with the form of the music with relative precision. The composed structures circumscribe several spheres through which the multi-thematic music attains various episodes which, as a whole, fathom a broad spectrum of mentalities, playing techniques, dynamic, density and intensity: between almost empty surfaces and very dynamic moments, between diatonic vocals and noise and moments which run at times through the head, at times dance-like through the legs. The tonal and rhythmical ideas and their utilisation remind one every so often a little of the music and philosophy of the theoretician and composer George Russel. The compositional accomplishment is, at least for the means of a jazz combo, above average which, particularly in respect to the development status of (curious) young players, has more a stimulative effect than a restrictive one.
The medial position between 'art' on a pedestal and the integratory mentality of folk and pop music is striking. The inspiration for the creation of a composition can arise from the most varied of sources ranging from the chanson to Anton Webern. The intensive dialogue of Christoph Baumann with theatre and film music has afforded the development of sensorium to produce a diversity of forms. The music proceeds like a film and refers to various styles without appearing to be eclectic. They surprise again and again with quotes and scene changes which evoke pictures."
