Biografia
Ivan Monighetti, the master cellist now living in Switzerland, is as popular in Europe as he is in the USA. He was the last student of Mstislav Rostropovich at the Moscow Conservatory. He has collected numerous first-prizes at international competitions including, for example, the 1974 Tschaikowsky competition. Critics greeted his first performance in the West with great enthusiasm. As a soloist he has collaborated with the world's leading orchestras and conductors including the Berlin Philharmonic under Krszysztof Penderecki, the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig under Kurt Masur and the Moscow Philharmonic under Mstislav Rostropowitsch.
Ivan Monighetti's sensational appearances at numerous contemporary music festivals have brought him a wide-ranging reputation as one of the leading figures in the field of modern music. He is continuously expanding his musical scope through his work with such contemporary composers as Gubaidulina, Dutilleux, Penderecki, Schnittke and Xenakis. Many works written especially for him are now part of the established cello repertoire. His CD 'XX century music for cello solo' was nominated best recording of the year and awarded the coveted Diapason d'or. The spring of 2000 saw him perform the world premiere of the cello concert written especially for him by Rudolf Kelterborn in Belgium and all the large cities of Switzerland.
Ivan Monighetti is also a respected expert in the performance practice of the 18th and 19th centuries. He is the founder and artistic director of the Moscow Early Music Festival. Today he follows a double career as a soloist and conductor, both with international renown. His successful debut at the English Haydn Festival with Haydn's Nelson Mass and his symphonies led to his re-invitation in 1999 and 2000. He has toured with his own orchestra, the Camerata Boccherini, in Poland, Holland, France, Estonia and Russia.
In 1999 Swiss Television (RTSI) produced, together with Ivan Monighetti, two documentary films: "Ritratto a Monighetti" and "Monighetti: storie di famiglia". He has recorded for the Harmonia Mundi, Erato, Pan Classics, Orfeo, Berlin Classics and Chant du monde. The recordings include the complete works for violoncello by Bach, Beethoven, the concerts of Boccherini, Haydn, Pleyel, Schostakowitsch, Prokofjew, Mansurian, Penderecki and many more.
Ivan Monighetti is professor for cello at the Basel Academy of Music.
