A music historian, Briner studied German language and literature and musicology at the Conservatory and University of Zurich from 1943 until 1952, during one of those years he studied under Paul Hindemith. In 1968 he became a member of the board for the Hindemith foundation and from 1986 until 1998 president thereof. In 1953 he received his doctorate, his dissertation was entitled "Der Wandel der Musik als Zeitkunst" published in Vienna 1955. He worked together with Rolf Liebermann at Radio Zurich for two years. From 1955 until 1964 he taught in the department of music at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia (USA). From 1964 until 1988 he was features editor for music and musicology at the 'Neue Zürcher Zeitung' (NZZ). Briner's main areas of knowledge are the life and work of Paul Hindemith, new music since 1880, composition in Switzerland and the music history of Zurich.
