Biography
* 1954 Biel.

Roman Brotbeck was born and raised in Biel and studied musicology and literary criticism at the University of Zurich, where he wrote his doctoral thesis about Max Reger.
From 1982 to 1988 he worked as a music editor and producer for Swiss Radio DRS2. From 1988 to 1994, the Swiss National Fund granted him a research assignment on early microtonality in twentieth century music. He spent research periods in Mexico, Canada, France, USA and the USSR.
From 1996 to 2002 he was President of the Swiss Association of Musicians; from 1999 to 2003 Director of the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Bern, and from 2003 to 2010 Head of the Music Department and Vice-director of Bern University of the Arts (HKB). From 2002 to 2009, he was Director a.i. and 2011/12 Head of Research a.i. at the HKB. He has been a research lecturer at the HKB since 2001 and works as a publicist. He has collaborated or headed various research projects and lectured in musicology and analysis at various schools of music since 1983.
Roman Brotbeck has written numerous publications and papers, mostly on twentieth century music. He was active in the conception and organisation of various large-scale interdisciplinary and musical cultural projects, such as the Holliger/Walser Woche in Biel in 1996 and the 2nd Fest der Künste in Engadin in 2000. He was director of the 4th, 5th and 6th Bern Biennales (2008, 2010, 2012).
