Biography
* 15. 05. 1919 Lausanne, † 15. 09. 2019.
Phillipe Buhler was born in Lausanne. He completed his secondary school education at the Scheurer-Kestner Highschool in Thann (Haut-Rhin) and made his undergraduate studies(?) at the University of Strasbourg. His studies in music began at the age of 6: first with his mother, who had diplomas from the conservatories of Lausanne and Geneva, and later in Mulhouse at the Conservatoire National under the tutelage of Philippe Strubin (harmony) and Marie Thérèse Frey (piano). From 1941 to 1943 he took refuge in Lyon, he worked with César Geoffray (harmony and choral direction). In 1944/45 he visited courses held by Alexandre Dénéréaz at the Conservatoire de Lausanne. Later, after the war, he lived from 1954 to 1956 in the USA. He studied at the University of Redlands (California) and made his BA and MA in composition and musicology.
From 1942 to 1944 Philippe Buhler taught musical theory and singing at schools in Toulon and Cahors. From 1945 to 1949 he joined the Conservatoire de Mulhouse where he taught a piano class and directed the concert choir Concordia. From 1950 onwards Phillipe Buhler emigrated to the USA and taught in different private schools in Connecticut and later in California. From 1965 to 1971 he taught harmony, musical theory and composition at the North Carolina School of the Arts (Winston-Salem) and directed the vocal ensemble The Camerata Singers, which went on tour through Europe in 1970/71. After returning to Switzerland in autumn 1971 he taught music until 1984 at several secondary schools in Geneva and directed choirs in the cantons of Geneva and Vaud including the Union Chorale du Sentier. Philippe Buhler has been engaged with composition and choral direction since 1985.
