Peter K. Frey was born in Baden in the canton of Aargau. As a double bassist he primarily performs freely improvised music he is, however, also active as a composer of musical-scenic productions and cooperates frequently with visual artists on installation projects; he continues to realise installations under the title 'Ton' together with Theres Stämpfli, a ceramicist with whom he has worked since 1993. Frey currently performs in the trio KARL ein KARL together with Michel Seigner and Alfred Zimmerlin, in the double bass duo Studer-Frey and solo. Since 1978 he has taught improvised and computer music at various institutions including the Lucerne School of Music, the Basel Academy of Music, the FF Art School in Zurich and the College for Social Work in Zurich. Frey is joint founder and co-director of the Workshop for Improvised Music (WIM) in Zurich and a member of the association 'Improvisieren.org' which organises the triennial 'International Tagung für Improvisation, Luzern' and runs a post-graduate course for improvised chamber music at the Basel Academy of Music. He has recorded with the Voerkel-Frey-Lovens Trio, KARL ein KARL, Eichenbergers Domino and various samplers under the FMP, Unit-Records, Musikszene Schweiz MGB and EMANEM labels.
