‘Tantris’ comes from a section of ‘Finnigan's Wake’ by James Joyce. Both the soprano and the instruments are set in a linear, contrapuntal fashion. Smaller intervals predominate in the soprano part, which circle around a pivotal central tone, often becoming enriched with the use of quartertones. Only in the setting of certain important words are bigger leaps used.
