Biography

Miriam Fernández was born in Mar del Plata, Argentina. She has received several awards including those awarded by the International Guitar Competition in Cologne, The Victoria National Guitar Competition, Rotary Club International, and the Young Art Biennale of Mar del Plata. In 2003 she received the second prize (no first prize was awarded) at 'Nicati', the International Competition for Soloists in Contemporary Music in Biel, Switzerland.
Fernández performs with orchestras in Argentina, Spain and Switzerland. With the support of the Swiss Culture Foundation Pro-Helvetia the guitarist performed a series of concerts and headed lectures on Argentinian contemporary music in 2005. Miriam Fernández holds an important teaching position and works as artistic director of various musical projects in Argentina and Switzerland. She is also an active member of the Swiss Association of Musicians. Her concert programmes encompass different repertoires from Renaissance to contemporary music with regular performances in Europe and America. Miriam Fernández was a student of Eduardo Isaac and Víctor Villadangos and graduated from Luis Gianneo Conservatory in Mar del Plata. In the year 2000 she came to Switzerland and continued her studies in the class of Maria Livia São Marcos at the Geneva Conservatory where she received the 'Premier Prix de Virtuosité' with distinction in 2004 and graduated from her postgraduate studies as a chamber ensemble player with a special mention for contemporary music in 2004. She attended master classes headed by Jean-Jacques Balet and Dusan Bogdanovic.
