Following his primary school education he attended the 'Literargymnasiums Zürichberg' (1966- 1972) and went on to receive his piano teacher's diploma after studying at the conservatory in Zurich under the tutelage of Hans Andreae (analysis with Rudolf Kelterborn) and finally graduated in 1980 from a music theory and composition study led by Hans-Ulrich Lehmann. He taught piano at various middle schools and music schools, has given courses in music theory at the Migros Club School in St.Gallen and led aural training courses in the vocational department and improvisations courses in the school music department of Zurich Conservatory, all in addition to his activities as a freelance theory teacher.
In 1982 Christian Bänninger founded the Private School for Music theory (organised training for SMPV students).
His reviews and other written contributions can be found in various press bodies including the Aargauer Tagblatt, Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Zürichsee-Zeitung, Musik und Theater, Zofinger Tagblatt.
Today Christian Bänninger works 100% freelance.
