Biography
* 12. 03. 1955.

The Swiss-born Marie-Jeanne Dufour was educated at the conservatory in Bern. She studied flute under the tutelage of G. Rumpel and attended course in conducting headed by R. Benzi in Bordeaux and O. Suitner at the Salzburg Summer Academy where she was awarded the ORF Conductor's Prize.
Dufour learnt the opera business from scratch: she was the assistant of F. Leitner, B. Weikert and N. Santi. She was the first woman in history of Zurich Opera House to take the conductors stand at the 1980 performance of Donizetti's Don Pasquale. Ms Dufour's first performances in Switzerland of Wolfgang Rihm's 'Jakob Lenz', Udo Zimmermann's 'Die weisse Rose' and Gay/Britten's 'Bettleroper' were met with great success.
There followed a number of engagements in the whole of Switzerland with orchestras such as the 'Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich' and the 'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande'. In 1987 she accepted a position at the 'Hamburgische Staatsoper'. Since 1988 Marie-Jeanne Dufour has conducted numerous concerts in Germany, Austria, Italy and the Czech Republic. She conducted 'Don Giovanni' to open the season 1989/90 at the 'Staatstheater Wiesbaden'. From January 1990 onwards Dufour was appointed principal conductor and vice General Music Director (GMD) by O. Leininger, the theatre director at Weisbaden; in 1991 she was appointed temporary GMD.
Dufour was appointed GMD for the season 1995/96 at the 'Südthüringische Staatstheater' by the theatre director from Meiningen U. Burkhardt
The symphony concert series at the 'Meininger Theater' was not only characterised by the large symphonies but also showed an extraordinary commitment to contemporary music. The arrangement of the youth concert series 'Hören-Lernen', in collaboration with the moderator Stephan Breith, met with equal success.
In February 1997 Marie-Jeanne Dufour made her debut at the 'Deutschen Oper Berlin' with the premiere of Carlisle Floyd's opera 'Susannah'.
Ms Dufour was invited to return to Zurich Opera House by the theatre director A. Pereira to take on the artistic direction of the International Opera Studio. She began her work in the season 2001/02.
