Daniel Hess was born in Zurich. He studied the viola in Zurich, Lucerne and Jerusalem and composition under Caspar Diethelm in Lucerne. He has been a violist at Zurich Opera House since 2000. He forged links with Josef Haselbach and Rudolf Kelterborn.
1986 - First prize at the competition for composition in Rheinach (Basel Land) with his first string quartet
1991 - World premiere of his first symphony by the Nordböhmischen Philharmonie under the direction of Jost Meier - various commissions and performances in Switzerland, the Ukraine, Germany and Israel
1996 - Commendation for his pieces for children ('...wenn man müde ist' for viola [cello] and piano published by HBS Nepomuk/Aarau)
August 2004 - World premiere of his fourth symphony 'Hero und Leander' (commission for the International Youth Symphony Orchestra, Elbe/Weser, Germany) - commission from the Ensemble Kontraste and Zurich Chamber Orchestra.
