Biography
* 03. 10. 1969.

Having been predominately occupied writing pieces for his own Jazzrock-Bigband 'KGB', Kasper Ewald subsequently studied music theory and composition at the 'Musik-Akademie Basel' (Basel Academy of Music) under Roland Moser and Detlev Müller-Siemens. His education was supplemented by tuition at the Basel School of Jazz under Hans Feigenwinter and by a film music seminar with Ennio Morricone. In 1997 Ewald was awarded a sabbatical year by the Christoph Delz Foundation in Basel, which enabled him to compose the music theatre piece 'Brambilla'. After supplementary studies in the electronic studio at the School of Arts in Berlin and a further stay in Amsterdam, Kaspar Ewald began teaching in Autumn 2000 at the 'Musikhochschule Zürich' (Zurich School of Music).

The clavinet is already an historical instrument, popular in rock and pop music of the seventies. An expensive instrument (a kind of electronic harpsichord), which was almost wiped out by the cheaper synthesizers. The clavinet-sound on synthesizers is improving noticeably.

Wolken (2001)
A school project

Instrumentation: for choir and chamber ensemble (2fl.cl/tpt.tbn/vib.pf4hnd/gtr/db)

Texts: Volkslied

This feature length project sets traditional Swiss love-songs (in four - five voice choral parts) against contemporary sounds and rhythm pieces (flippers, wooden shoes, clapping, newspaper sounds, matches, balloons). The formal course of the evening is determined by the order of the songs such that the combination of their contents results in a sensible dramaturgical development - from the breaking of a heart by an old love to the hope of love anew.
The conceptual pieces are based on the songs without the alliance being necessarily apparent. The two threads are plaited by a kind of dream circus band, in which the music from the sound pieces leads to the tonal world of the folksongs and out again to less certain regions.
The songs and the clapping and stamping piece ‘Hand & Fuss’ can be performed seperately.
The interludes of the chamber ensemble can be rearranged.
