Biography

Franziska Baumann is a singer, vocal performer and sound artist who studied at Winterthur Conservatory and attended master classes headed by Fred Frith, Barre Phillips et al. She expanded her vocal talent under the tutelage of Phil Companella in New York, Beatrice Mathez in Basel, Lauren Newton in Lucerne and Romeo Alavi Kia in Vienna.
Baumann has a long history of improvised music, spatial acoustic projects and installation projects, this in an environment in which a whole spectrum of perspectives for today's creative musicians is mirrored: ranging from pure acoustic music to sensory or digital techniques, set between the two poles of composition and improvisation, spacial acoustic installations and staged concert situations. As a vocalist she expanded the expressive potential of the voice enormously and turned it into an instrument in its own right. Her acoustic trademark is built on "glottal clicks", multiphonics and various microtonal, speech-like and timbre-modifying vocal techniques.
During her residency at the STEIM centre in Amsterdam, she developed interactive electronic equipment, a sensorglove, which enables her to control via gestures in real time the articulation of voice, sound and space.
With her spatial acoustic projects she creates new contexts for specific interior and exterior spaces. Her special interest is focused on the changes in hearing in unusual locations, as well as the changed experience of the location through music.
Franziska Baumann teaches improvisation - composition at Berne's University of Music.
Colaboration in the research project "Body (without) Sound" together with Daniel Weissenberg et.al.
Worked together with Matthias Ziegler, Christoph Baumann, Jürg Solothurnmann, Lauren Newton, Jacques Demierre, Marie Schwab, Fred Frith, Mick Harris, Uli Phillipp, Michel Wintsch, Ninh Le Quan, Anne La Berge, Fritz Hauser, Andres Bosshard, Jean Jacques Pedretti, Hervé Provini, Bernhard Trontin, Charlotte Hug, Peter Schärli.
Franziska Baumann received various grants and scholarships.
Her solo and ensemble concerts have seen her perform in the Netherlands, Poland, the Czech Republic, Italy, Romania, Spain, South Korea, USA, Canada and Germany.
She also heads master classes and seminars on music at various music academies.
