Biography

Fabio Maffei, an Italian-Swiss national, was born in Yverdon (Switzerland) on 2nd October 1968.
He began to play the piano at the age of 4, and from 1976 to 1985 he studied at the Conservatory of Lausanne in the class of Anne-Marie Tabachnik. For several years he took interpretation classes with the pianist Fausto Zadra, before continuing his studies with the pianist Esther Yellin at the Heinrich Neuhaus Foundation in Zurich.
From 1985 he studied composition privately with the Swiss composer René Gerber.
He also studied conducting under Chen Liang-Sheng in Geneva and Michel Tabachnik.
Fabio Maffei has won several prizes at piano competitions (Schweizerischer Jugendmusikwettbewerb, Jecklin Musiktreffen, Piano 80). He has performed in Switzerland and abroad, both as recitalist and with orchestra.
His first work (Divertimento for seven wind instruments and piano) was premiered in 1988 in the Wiener Konzerthaus by the Vienna Virtuosi. In 1993 he won the special prize at the composing competition "Musique pour la Liturgie" of the "Procure Romande de Musique Sacrée" in Fribourg. Two years later, his work Le Petit Prince won the first prize at the Competition for Young Composers of the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne. In 2003, his Lacrimoso in remembrance of Nicholas Green was first performed by the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande under Mario Venzago.
His compositions (works for orchestra and chamber music) have been performed in Switzerland, in Europe and in the Americas. They have also been broadcast on radio and television, and have appeared on CD.
In 1996 Fabio Maffei was awarded a medal by the Arts-Sciences-Lettres Society of Paris.
