Born in Geneva, Lionel Rogg completed his musical studies at the conservatory there and successively obtained a 'Premier Prix d'orgue avec distinction' in 1956 (class of Pierre Segond) and a 'Premier Prix de piano' in 1957 (class of Nikita Magaloff). A pupil of Charles Chaix for composition, he succeeded him as professor of counterpoint in 1960. His youth works include a symphony for chamber orchestra and a piano concerto. Engrossed by his career as organist, which takes him all over the world, Lionel Rogg returned to composition in 1983, to fulfil the Geneva Conservatory's commission of a work to celebrate the 150th anniversary of its foundation, since then he has enriched his catalogue of works with compositions for organ, piano and various solo instruments. As professor for organ at the Geneva Conservatory, for improvisation at the Scuola Civica in Milan, Lionel Rogg also frequently heads master classes for organ in America, England or Japan. He is doctor honoris causa of Geneva University and honorary member of the Royal College of Organists, London.
