François Thury studied piano at Lausanne Conservatory in the class of Jean Perrin and orchestration in the class of Jean Balissat. He began composing in 1980. An encounter with Henry Dutilleux encouraged him further in this vocation. His style (mostly tonal and polytonal) is influenced by impressionism and jazz.
