Mattia Zappa (violoncello) and Massimiliano Mainolfi (piano) formed the Duo Zappa.Mainolfi
in 1994 while studying at the world renowned New York Juilliard School. The duo made its debut in 1995 at the Alice Tully Hall in the New York Lincoln Center within the framework of the Chamber Music Evenings. Further studies were completed by the two musicians under the tutelage of such internationally eminent figures as Harvey Shapiro and Oxana Yablonskaya in New York, Thomas Demenga and Gerard Wyss in Basel, Maria Curcio in London and Steven Isserlis, Andràs Schiff and Ferenc Rados at the International Musicians Seminar in Prussia Cove, Cornwall. There followed a master course with a diploma on completion at the Accademia Pianistica in Imola, Italy, under the leadership of Pier Narciso Masi (2001-2004).
Zappa and Mainolfi are also cutting-edge soloists; as such Massimiliano Mainolfi won the Young Concert Artist International competition in New York and performed his Carnegie Recital Hall Solo Debut the following year. The Swiss cellist Mattia Zappa concerted repeatedly with the Basel Symphony Orchestra, the Festival Strings Lucerne (solo cellist 2000-2002), the Swiss Chamber Philharmonic, the 'Orchestre de Chambre de Genève' and the Orchestra of the Italian speaking region of Switzerland in Lugano. He has been a member, under special contract, of the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich since 2000.
The Duo Zappa.Mainolfi has appeared in recent years at established European centres of music in Germany, Holland, Denmark, Scandinavia, France, Italy and Switzerland; their joint Carnegie Hall debut was performed in March 2001. The Duo's debut in the Chamber Music Hall of the Berlin Philharmonic followed in 2003. Since then the Duo Zappa.Mainolfi have received invitations to such prestigious international festivals as Montreux (Switzerland), Prussia Cove (Great Britain), Lascours (France), and Summit in New York.
The duo has received awards from various international chamber music competitions including the Premio Vittorio Gui (Florence), the G.B. Viotti (Vercelli), the Concorso Città di Pinerolo, the Concorso Trio di Trieste, followed by numerous radio and CD recordings for the Ducale label, Swiss Radio and German Radio Berlin. A CD with Beethoven sonatas and a CD of Italian composers from the twentieth century have been recently published.
