Raymond Vauterin was born in Courtrai, Belgium. His father was Belgian and his mother Swiss. He was born into a very musical environment and began playing cello at the tender age of five, his education in music continued until he graduated from Courtrai Conservatory (Belgium) in 1948 at the age of 16. For many years after he devoted himself to chamber music together with his brother and parents, who were all professional musicians. During this time he also began to compose and improvise independently. In 1962 he immigrated to Switzerland. He received many influences and inspiration for his compositions from the rich musical environment of Vevey where he lived; here he had the possibility to write numerous works for diverse instrumentation.
As he understands himself to be independent and self-taught so Vauterin encourages musicians time and again to find their own style.
Vauterin acquired a processor in 1989 that allowed him to produce sounds with a computer. Utilisation of the computer allowed him to develop a musical language, which is often characterised by the use of polytonality but in a very enlarged tonal writing in order to explore various sound timbres. The same can be said for his improvisations which were enriched by multiple creative possibilities and entered a new dimension after being created in a purely compositional context.
