Christian Giger was born in Jura, Switzerland on May 21 1959. Initially he studied percussion, on to composition with Emile de Ceuninck, then with Alfred Schweizer. In 1986 he received the prize awarded by the city of Moutier and in 1988 the GEDE prize. In 1994 he worked for six months in Paris after winning a fellowship prize awarded by the district of Bern. In 1990 he set up his own performing group to play his own music, with numerous concerts including the International Music Festival, Lucerne, the Music Festival of Jura, the 'la cité des arts' and the 'Cité Universitaire' of Paris. His first important concert took place in New York in 1985 where his piece 'Hommages' was given its premiere by Pierre Sublet. His last major concert took place in Ukraine, within the framework of the International Music Festival of Kiev with the pianist Roumen Kroumov (Bulgaria). His recent compositions include 'Sept nouvelles Ukrainienne' for the guitarist Anton Koudriavtsev, and 'Rouge' for the Zurich Symphony Orchestra. Christian Giger lives and works as an independent artist.
