Biography

Javier Hagen was born in Barcelona and raised between 6 languages in Spain, Germany and Switzerland. He received vocal training from Roland Hermann, Alain Billard and Nicolai Gedda, and studied composition under Goebbels and Rihm in Zurich, Karlsruhe and Ferrara. He enjoys international renown as a world-class interpreter of contemporary music, has premiered hundreds of works globally and performs as a member of the UMS 'n JIP duo, one of the most active New Music ensembles worldwide. His oeuvre comprises more than 100 works, with performances thereof across the whole of Europe, the Near East, the Americas, Australia and East Asia. Hagen has accepted invitations to lecture as a guest at the universities of Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Seoul, Moscow, Riga, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, Bogota, New York, Denton, Sevilla, Kairo, Tbilisi, Istanbul and Thessaloniki. He is President of the Swiss Society for Contemporary Music Valais (ISCM Switzerland), President of the International Society for Contemporary Music Valais (IGNM-VS), Director of the Swiss contemporary music festival Forum Wallis and jury member of various national and international competitions. Furthermore, Hagen is a member of various commissions working on the establishment of the canton of Valais' cultural policy and also works on behalf of UNESCO on the inventory of intangible cultural heritage. Javier Hagen was nominated for "Valaisian of the Year" in 2007. In 2013 he was recipient of the culture prize awarded by the Canton of Valais.

TWO - electropop chamber orchestra/musical theatre featuring works for voice, recorder and electronics by UMS 'n JIP.
Inspired by texts taken from "20 Minuten", UMS and JIP created a chamber opera in collaboration with director Wolfgang Beuschel and artist Gisela-Ethaner Schelble. Together they amalgamised elaborate music, everyday situations and texts about the latest Vatikan scandal, simulated cyber attacks on American chemical companies and quotes from the small ads to form extremely dense and absurd jokes. With a wink and a nudge, the artists take the audience on a journey into an unpredictable cosmos where strange is the norm and the wackiness of being comforting: Normality is unique.

This composition for live electronics and voice serves technoid elements and extremes of register beyond the range of speech in the bass and descant range. Its construction is like a linked mobile rich in motives that reacts to the slightest temporal displacement in the recitation of the text. Working primarily on the auditory threshold, the sophisticated Genelec-LPS-System disseminates a sculptural and chamber music-like sound image across the whole frequency band. Ringacker mobiles metaphorically create an edgy counterpoint to the deceptive idyll found in Hoppe's narratives. A total of 9 channels (5 MIDI channels, two of which are played live, and 4 audio channels with pre-fabricated material) are mixed live following a constructivistic composition sketch and punctuated with 7 sung intermezzi. They create rooms of travel, childhood and natural experience associations - or they bring the listener back to reality with periodic, mischievously absurd distortions (excerpts from newspaper reports, falsetto voices, language tituration).
