Biography
* 1970 Basel.

Wanja Aloe was born and raised in Basel. After finishing his Matura, he went on to complete a two-year course in guitar at the SwissJazzSchool in Bern. Aloe then began a course in musical theory and composition at the Musik Akademie Basel under the tutelage of Roland Moser, Detlev Müller-Siemens, Balz Trümpy and Dorothée Schubarth (teacher's diploma in 2001). He was the recipient of a Landis & Gyr stipend that allowed him to study under Philip Cashian at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he also attended further composition seminars. In 2002, Wanja Aloe was offered an award by the Christoph Delz Foundation in Basel, which enabled him to complete an orchestral work. His musical education was reinforced by visits to various courses headed by such luminaries as György Kurtág, Vinko Globokar, Walter Fähndrich and Peter Maxwell Davis.
Aloe has been a lecturer in musical theory and improvisation at Bern University of the Arts since 2006.

Work list

Soleil noir (2007)

Instrumentation: for string trio

Soleil noir is a quote from the film "Belle de Jour" by Luis Bunuel. It becomes more imposing as the work proceeds. Light and light fantasies always play a role in my works, be it as a source of inspiration or emblematic of moods. Here it is a paradox, an ambivalent feeling: a dark glow, subdued colours, a cool heat or glowing cold and a very specific feeling of loneliness.
