The AMATI QUARTET received various awards shortly after its formation in 1981, amongst them the "Premier Grand Prix du Concours International" in Evian (1982) and the first prize at the "Karl Klingler-Competition" in Munich (1986).

Besides the classical and romantic repertoires, the quartet has a particular affinity for twentieth century music. Exciting programmes are formed by the juxtaposition of seldom performed works with the relevant works of the standard quartet literature. The quartet displays its vivid interest in contemporary music by performing world premieres of works by such composers as Rudolf Kelterborn, Bettina Skrzypczak, Terry Riley, Wladimir Vogel, Jacques Wildberger and Isang Yun.

Artistic challenge and inspiration are met by collaboration with other artists and their instrument. The quartet has been extended to quintet on many occasions, whether by the addition of a piano, a wind instrument, further strings or even voice by a list of renowned partners including Eduard Brunner, Bruno Canino, Karl Engel, David Geringas, Vladimir Mendelssohn, Antonio Meneses, Heinrich Schiff, Radovan Vlatkovic and Krystian Zimerman.

Regular tours of the music centres of Europe, North America and the Near and Far East and numerous recordings for CD and radio all bear witness to the high artistic nivaeu of the Amati Quartet. Two of their CD recordings - Schostakowitch Quartette 3 & 7 and Szymanovski op. 56 and Ravel - were awarded the German Record Reviewers Prize. Their latest CD release with the Hyden quartets has been awarded the prestigious 'Choc du monde de la musique'.

In recent years the Amati Quartet has performed with great success at the Musikverein in Vienna, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Wigmore Hall in London, the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, the Palau de la Musica in Barcelona, the Kölner Philharmonie, the Berliner Konzerthaus and in March 2001 in the Carnegie Hall in New York.
