Biography
* 16. 05. 1939.

Urs Schneider was born in St Gallen and began his violin studies at the age of six, graduating in 1961 from Zurich Conservatory. He studied conducting under Rafael Kubelik in Lucerne, Igor Markevitch in Madrid and Otto Klemperer in Zurich and London. At the age of fifteen he founded his own orchestra: the Pro Musica Orchestra with some seventy members. In 1962 he founded the East Switzerland Chamber Orchestra and then the Camerata Helvetica. He was principal conductor of the Shreveport Opera and Symphony Society (USA), the Camerata Stuttgart, Camerata Academica Salzburg (as the unanimously voted successor of Bernhard Paumgartner), the Haifa Symphony Orchestra, the Prague Chamber Soloists and the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra. For many years now Urs Schneider has been a jury member of the 'Concours International des Jeunes Chefs d'Orchestre' of the Bançon Festival, the Constantin Silvestri International Conducting Contest in Bucharest, and of competitions held in Israel, Taiwan and New York. In the year 2000 he was president of the jury for the 'Grand Prix Eurovision des Jeunes Musiciens'.
In 1962 he began his international career with four concerts in America, since then he has conducted more than 170 leading orchestras for operas and concerts in the whole of Europe, in America, South America, South Africa, Australia and the Far East. He has performed on 60 LP recordings and CDs including almost the whole orchestral works of Joachim Raff.
