Michel Hostettler was born in Avenches. He studied in Lausanne and Geneva.
His time was split for many years between teaching, directing choirs and composing.
Michel Hostettler is a recipient of the 'Grand Prix de Musique' of the 'Fondation vaudoise pour la promotion et la création artistique' and was one of the composers at the 'Fête des Vignerons', 1999 in Vevey.
Numerous secular and ecclesiastic works for choir, a cappella or accompanied, can be found in his work catalogue. Examples include the cantatas "De l'aube printanière au crépuscule d'été" based on ballads by Paul Fort (1975), "Chansons autour de ma maison" based on a poem by Emile Gardaz (1984), "Surge, illuminare" (1985), "Beati" (1989) and "Naissance de la lumière sur un poème de Francis Debluë" (2007).
Michel Hostettler is also the author of several song cycles and many compositions for children's choir.
His chamber music is prolific: He has written compositions for piano, harpsichord, marimba and for various formations, amongst them a string quartet which was world premièred by the Quatuor Sine Nomine in St. Petersburg in 1993.
Works for orchestra: "Pièce Concertante pour trompette et orchestre" (1978), "Sphères" for strings (1988), "Diptyque" for violin and orchestra, world premièred at the Festival Tibor Varga (1991), "Concertino" for flute and string orchestra (2005); "Trois Estampes" for pan flute, harp and string orchestra (2010); "Fantaisie" for horn and string orchestra (2013).
Lyrical works: "Lo Scex que plliau" (1982), "La Souris et le Sage", for soli, choir and youth orchestra (2005), "Le Rossignol et l'Empereur" opera for children after H. Ch. Andersen (2012).
