Founded in 1962 with the intention of performing concerts as a small, flexible formation without a conductor, CAMERATA BERN, under the direction of the concert master Alexander van Wijnkoop (1962-78), Thomas Füri (1979-92), Ana Chumachenko and Thomas Zehetmair (1993-1999) and Erich Höbarth (since 2000) has developed into one of the world's most renowned chamber orchestras.
The 14 members of the ensemble are all trained soloists. Their play, under the artistic direction of Erich Höbarth and various guest conductors, is distinguished by a subtle and absolute homogeneous sound culture, freshness and exceedingly impeccable style in all areas of their repertoire from Baroque through to the present.
These outstanding qualities have led to collaborations with numerous internationally renowned artists including Heinz Holliger, Paul Meyer, Marie Luise Neunecker, Aurèle Nicolet, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Maurice André, the Raschèr Saxophon Quartett, András Schiff, Bruno Canino, Radu Lupu, Peter Serkin, Gidon Kremer, Nathan Milstein, Boris Pergamenschikow, Narciso Yepes, Pepe Romero, Barbara Hendricks, Peter Schreier, Emmanuel Pahud, Reinhard Friedrich, Sabine Meyer et al. Countless tours have led the CAMERATA BERN through Europe and on to North and south America, Southern Asia, the Far East, Australia and Japan.
Recordings made for DG/Archiv, DECCA, Denon, ERATO, Berlin Classics, Novalis, ECM and Philips have won numerous international awards including the Deutschen Schallplattenkritik, the Prize Grand Prix du Disque, the Record Critics Award, the Record Academy Prize and the Echo Klassik Prize of the Deutschen Phono-Akademie.
Due its versatility and depth of expression, impeccable style and virtuosity, it's charm and spontaneity the CAMERATA BERN is one of the leading European chamber orchestras.
