Walter Feldmann was born in Glarus in 1965. After graduating from high school and studying literature, linguistics and musicology at the University of Zurich, he devoted himself to music. His musical career can be described as unusual: as an autodidact, but with solid flute training with Dominique Hunziker and Anne Utagawa in Aarau, he made a name for himself as a flautist and composer in the music world. He has been a member of the flute octet les joueurs de flute since 1998.
Beginning in 1986 Walter Feldmann turned his energies to composition. He attended various courses on music informatics at Ircam (Paris). His works found international attention early on. They are commissioned and performed by renowned festivals and orchestras: Ircam Festival Agora Paris, Tage für Neue Musik Zurich Stuttgart and Zurich, Biennale Nationale de danse du Val de Marne... / SWR Stuttgart Symphony Orchestra, Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, Ensemble Intercontemporain Paris, Collegium Novum Zurich, Ensemble Contrechamps, Ensemble Proton... His works are published by Carus Verlag Stuttgart and Éditions Marta.
Walter Feldmann was the founder and artistic director of Ensemble S (Zurich) for contemporary music (1991-96). From 1994 to 2003 he was artistic director of the international festival Tage für Neue Musik Zurich, where he worked closely with the great composers of his time: Pierre Boulez, Gérard Grisey, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Helmut Lachenmann, Brian Ferneyhough, Klaus K. Hübler, Kaija Saariaho, Emmanuel Nunes, Pierluigi Billone...
