The Camerata Zurich was initiated in 1957 by Räto Tschupp and emerged from a loosely assembled chamber orchestra. A string ensemble consisting of 16 to 20 professional musicians forms the basis of the orchestra, which can be supplemented by harpsichord, wind instruments or special instruments depending on the programme's requirements.
