Biography

Born in Basel, Martin Jaggi has played the violoncello since the age of seven and received early lessons in composition from his father Rudolf Jaggi. He studied composition under Rudolf Kelterborn from 1995 until 1996, before studying violoncello under Reinhard Latzko and composition under Detlev Müller-Siemens (1996 – 2000), graduating with a distinction from the University of Music in Basel. His education continued under Walter Grimmer at Zurich University of the Arts/Music, where he received his concert diploma with distinction in 2002. His studies were supplemented with courses in composition given by Manfred Stahnke at the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre (2004 - 2006), master classes headed by Claude Starck, Colin Carr and Ivan Chiffoleau (violoncello), and under the tutelage of Marc-André Dalbavie and Helmut Lachenmann (composition).
Martin Jaggi has performed as a soloist with various orchestras and ensembles in many European countries and Paraguay. He is a member of the Ensemble Phoenix Basel and solo cellist of the basel sinfonietta and the Basel Festival Orchester. Jaggi has already enjoyed a certain degree of renown as a composer and his works have been broadcast over the radio on several occasions and performed in various European countries and Canada. Jaggi has recieved commissions for compositions from the Sinfonieorchester Basel, the A-Devantgarde Festival Munich, Pro Helvetia, the Ensemble Phoenix Basel, the Ensemble für Neue Musik Zürich and the Kammerorchester Basel, the Münchener Kammerorchester and the basel sinfonietta.
