Born the son of the late romantic Richard Flury on the 25th of August 1941, Flury received his first musical stimulation from his family home. After completing his undergraduate studies he received his violin diploma from Biel Conservatory subsequent to studies under Walter Kägi. From 1961 until 1967 he was principal violinist in the Flury Quartet. He studied philosophy, art history and musicology, first at the University of Bern and then in Basel, where he also attended the master class of Hansheinz Schneeberger from 1965 until 1968. He also became a member of the Basel Chamber Orchestra. After finishing his studies Urs Joseph Flury was, for a couple of years, teacher of music theory and violin at Biel Conservatory after which he worked as a violin teacher at schools in the city and canton of Solothurn. He received the music prize from the canton of Solothurn in 1993. Urs Joseph Flury conducts the Solothurn Chamber Orchestra and the 'Orchestre du Foyer' in Moutier.
The compositional works of Urs Joseph Flury are in the new romantic impressionist tradition, but move in a unique musical language. Besides chamber music and orchestral works his compositions also encompass instrumental concerts, songs and choir works. Urs Joseph Flury works intensively on the adaptation of little known treasures and rarities from times past; in this manner he has adapted compositions by the philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau, the genius clown and musician Adrian Wettach (Grock), the Austrian dramatist Arthur Schnitzler and many more.
