Claudia Ulla Binder

Claudia Ulla Binder received her first intense and consequential influences in improvisation in 1980 at the Creative Music Studio in Woodstock, North America, where she became acquainted with George E. Lewis and many other American musicians who, even then, shifted freely between all musical genres. She graduated in psychology in 1983. Her teachers later on in Germany were the composer Dieter Schnebel and the jazz pianist Walter Norris. Ulla Binder has lived in Zurich since 1986 where she has been an active member of the lively improvisational music scene including, amongst other things, her involvement with the Workshop for Improvised Music (WIM). Further studies led her to the pianists Erna Ronca and Eva Serman, under whose she graduated with an SMPV teacher's certificate. In addition to the many spontaneous formations, Claudia Ulla Binder works primarily in a trio together with Dieter Ulrich (dr) and Christian Weber (b), which is extended to the quartet 'Box' by the addition of the Cologne-born saxophonist Joachim Zoepf.
In 2003 she performed 'Da geht die Strasse gehen die Leute' together with the flutist Susann Wehrli and the actress Tiziana Jelmini, the musical concepts to this piece were by Susann Wehrli based on texts by Ingeborg Bachmann and Elisabeth Wandeler-Deck.
Claudia Ulla Binder has performed together with numerous musicians including John Butcher, Roger Turner, Lol Coxhill, Phil Durrant, Christian Wolfarth, Co Streiff, Priska Walss, Gabriela Friedli, Stevie Wishart, Tomas Korber, Jean-Marc Montera, Alfred Zimmerlin and many, many others. She has appeared at the London Jazz Festival, LMC London, New Music America Festival, Taktlos Festival and the jazz festivals of Willisau and Shaffhausen.
In 1992 she received a commission for a composition from the canton of Zurich and financial awards from the canton of Aargau in 1994, 1999 and 2002.
