Biography
Born in Zurich in 1965. Lives in Zurich and en route.
Following completion of her studies in visual arts and music, Hug received several awards and commisssions for her composititions (from solo works through to orchestral works) from Pro Helvetia and Lucerne Festival to name but two. She has been Artist in Residence in London, Paris, Cork European Capital of Culture 05 and Berlin, and additionaly received the city of Zurich's prize for composition in 2006. Charlotte Hug was "artiste etoille" at the 2011 Lucerne Festival.
Hug is best known for her solo performances in unusual locations, such as the ice tunnels of the Rhône glacier, the House of Detention - a 250 year old former prison in London's Farringdon, the half demolished Humboldthain bunker in Berlin, the hot healing sulphur springs beneath the former luxury hotel of Verenahof in Baden, Switzerland and the dockyard in Coph on the Irish Atlantic coast.
Hug seeks to develop instrumental techniques to their fullest possible extent, which includes the "soft bow technique", by means of which she can play up to eight voices on her instrument. She plays a viola made by J.G. Thir in 1763. She also specializes in combining the sounds of viola and voice, which has resulted is an unmistakable and distinct tonal language.
Her sound-drawings or "Son-Icons" have found international recognition in both visual and musical contexts. Hug also employs these graphic notations in her compositions to create spatial scores ranging in configuration from solo to orchestral pieces. Charlotte Hug has enjoyed one-woman shows at the Cité internationale des Arts Paris, the Kunstkeller Berne, Swissnex in San Francisco, the Sirius Arts Centre Cobh Cork in Ireland and the Lucerne Museum of Art.
Her activities as a soloist, composer or conducter of her own works have thus far led her to important festivals in Europe, North and Latin America and Canada. Her discography is extensive and includes many international labels.
Hug has collaborated with the photographer and film maker Alberto Venzago, the theatre and opera director Jossi Wieler and together in concerts with free or conceptual improvisations with performers such as Joan Jeanrenaud, Maggie Nicols, Barry Guy, Phil Minton, Larry Ochs, Elliott Sharp etc.
Hug gives lectures seminars and heads master classes at the ETH Zurich, MC Gill University Montreal, the University of British Columbia Vancouver and Victoria and CNMAT Centre for New Music and Audio Technologies UC Berkeley. She has held a lecturship at Zurich's University of the Arts since 2008.
