Biography
* 12. 02. 1965.

Martin Merker received his first musical education at the age of five. He studied violoncello under the tutelage of the Russian cellist prof. Karine Georgian at the Musikhochschule Detmold and then under Reinhard Latzko and Ivan Monighetti at the Musikakademie Basel where he graduated with a concert diploma in 1994. He was twice winner of international chamber music competitions (Moncalieri 1993 and Tortona 1994). A stipend from the DAAD enabled him to spend a period of time (1994/95) in Barcelona studying under Lluis Claret. Since 1987, Martin Merker has been the cellist for the multi international competition winning Offenburger Streichtrio, with whom he has toured many European countries, South America and Asia. He is a member of the Camerata Bern and solo cellist with the Aargauer Sinfonieorchester. Martin Merker is a chamber musician, soloist, guest lecturer and music reviewer. Several contemporary musicians have dedicated their work to him including Manfred Weiss, Liduino Pitombeira, Erkki Palola and Meinrad Schütter.
